I love seeing more detailers switch to sheepskin polishing pads. Nothing beats real wool for safe, clean paint correction. But honestly? I see so many people ruin their wool pads with simple wrong habits.
Customers always tell me: “My pad went hard”, “The wool clumped up”, or “It started scratching the paint.” And every time I ask how they cleaned it? The answer is the same — hot water, machine wash, or leaving it soaking overnight. Aiyaya, such a waste!
Your wool pad is not plastic. It’s natural wool protein and real leather backing, just like your hair and skin. It has natural oils and fiber crimps that keep it soft and effective. Bad treatment kills its texture in just a few uses. Proper care is not just for longevity — it’s how you protect your car paint from swirl marks.
You must clean your wool pad after every use. Invisible compound dust and micro abrasives hide deep in the wool. Once they dry, they turn into tiny sandpaper. Professional detailers always keep two pads: one for working, one clean and dry.
Here is my factory-grade routine. Start with a back-flush right after polishing. Run cool water from the leather side outward to push trapped grit out. Rinsing only the top locks dirt deeper, which causes hidden scratches.
Hand wash gently in cool water with pH-neutral wool soap or mild car shampoo. Do not scrub hard, do not twist, and never wring it out like old clothing. Only squeeze softly. Rinse until the water is perfectly clear — leftover soap ruins the wool’s natural softness.
Drying is the #1 reason pads fail. Never use heat, heaters, dryers, or direct sunlight. Heat burns the leather oils, and UV breaks wool fibers. Shake the pad well, put it over a bottle to keep airflow open, and let it air dry in cool shade for 24 to 48 hours.
Once dry, brush the wool with a slicker brush. This reopens the fiber crimps, removes tiny leftover dirt, and brings back that brand-new fluffy feel.
Avoid these fatal mistakes: no dish soap, no overnight soaking, no microfiber mixed washing, and no sealed storage.
Four golden rules: cool water only, squeeze do not twist, shade air dry, and always brush.
Can I machine wash it?
Absolutely not. Spinning tears wool from the leather and causes permanent shedding. Hand wash only.
When should I replace it?
Replace your pad if the leather turns brittle, cracks easily, or has large bald spots.
