Sheepskin vs Shearling: What’s the Difference?

A sourcing guide for brands, wholesalers & buyers

If you’re sourcing sheepskin products for your brand or wholesale business, you’ve almost certainly encountered both terms: sheepskin and shearling. They’re often used interchangeably — but they’re not the same material, and confusing them can lead to sourcing the wrong product entirely.

The Short Answer

Both sheepskin and shearling are wool-on products made from sheep hide — the key difference is how the wool is processed and how long it is.

Sheepskin retains the full natural wool fleece on one side, with the leather side tanned and finished on the other. Shearling is sheepskin where the wool has been clipped to a uniform short length, giving it a cleaner, more refined appearance.

All shearling is sheepskin, but not all sheepskin is shearling.

Sheepskin

  • Full wool fleece retained on the inner side
  • Leather (nappa, suede, or full-grain) finish on the outer side
  • Natural wool length — longer, softer, with more loft
  • Excellent warmth, breathability, and moisture-wicking properties
  • Common uses: rugs, seat covers, baby products, slippers, blankets, natural wool-on garments

Shearling

  • Wool clipped to a uniform short depth (typically 1–3 cm)
  • Leather exterior, short-wool interior
  • More structured appearance, easier to work with in tailored garments
  • Naturally insulating and moisture-wicking
  • Common uses: winter coats, bomber jackets, aviator styles, boots, slippers

What About “Lambskin”?

Lambskin refers to hide from a young sheep (lamb), rather than a mature one. The wool is finer and softer, with a denser fleece — making it popular for high-end fashion and baby products. Lambskin can be produced as either long-wool sheepskin or clipped shearling, depending on the end product.

Sourcing tip: If your brand targets the premium segment, lambskin shearling or fine lambskin wool-on offers the best hand-feel and visual appeal. For mid-market or functional products, full adult sheepskin delivers better cost efficiency at scale.

How to Choose the Right Material for Your Product

Choose sheepskin if you’re making:

Rugs, throws, seat covers, baby play mats, medical sheepskin pads, casual slippers, or any product where natural wool loft, softness, and warmth are the primary selling points.

Choose shearling if you’re making:

Winter outerwear (coats, bombers, aviator jackets), ankle or knee-high boots, structured slippers, or any product where a cleaner wool surface and tailored silhouette are important.

What to Ask Your Manufacturer

Whether you’re placing a custom OEM order or sourcing materials in bulk, always clarify these points upfront:

  • Hide origin — Australia, Spain, China, or local sourcing?
  • Tanning method — vegetable-tanned vs chrome-tanned?
  • Wool length & density — what natural wool grades are available?
  • Wool pile depth (shearling) — what range of clipped depths can they produce?
  • Leather side finish — suede, nappa, smooth, or brushed?
  • Color & dyeing options — natural, dyed wool, or printed?

A reliable source factory should be transparent about all of these and provide samples before bulk production begins.
